Mommy Moment #255342

Poor Owen hasn't been sleeping well with a little bit of a stuffy nose that seems to manifest itself in the middle of the night and leaves him gagging, ugh. Last night Owen ended up sleeping with me most of the night so he would stay asleep. Not ideal especially since I don't sleep well in close quarters. It left me still sound asleep still at 8:30 a.m. It was just after 8:30 that I began hearing plastic plates. I laid there laughing to myself because usually it means that Maya is up and has decided to play in her kitchen which is in her room. Most mornings Maya wakes up calling 'mommy, mommy, mommy' though maybe once every couple weeks does she get up on her own. The upside is that her bedroom door sticks....so she can't be up around the house without us....or at least that's what I thought. As I listened closer, I realized that she was a lot louder than I would have expected her to be. So, I got up, put my contacts in and realized that Miss Maya's bedroom was open a crack and that the noise was coming from the kitchen....downstairs. I quietly tiptoed down the stairs and there she was...on the counter (half on the stove, next to the knives) taking out all of her plates and cups. She turned around and got down then looked up at me, holding a cup, lid and straw. Smiling, she said "I'm thirsty" and she jumped off her stool and ran to the fridge from which she pulled out the milk. Laughing, I helped her pour a glass. She put the lid on, stuck the straw in, put the milk back and pulled out a piece of Babybel cheese from the fridge, opened it and looked at me and said "I'm hungry too!" Of course, I took a picture. How could I resist? At least it wasn't a bag a pancake mix all over my living room floor... oh wait, that was our last food adventure.

Chickasan

We never know if we will be able to keep Maya in her seat for dinner let alone have her actually consume what we are also having for dinner. Tonight, however, I made Chicken Parmesan for dinner and much to my surprise she had eaten her entire bowl before I even had a single bite of mine. Granted, I was busy getting the paper towels and forks I forgot on the counter then turning the oven off, however, she ate it all and the asked for 'more chickasan please.' Love it!! Of course, as is par for the course with Maya it was all over her dress despite the bib BUT at least it all went voluntarily into her tummy.

meow meow needs a time out!

Since she was a baby, we have know that Maya is a sleep talker. I hear her at night (through the wall) say all sorts of stuff and never fully wake up. My mom told me that last time Maya stayed the night with her, she was asking for juice in the middle of the night so my mom rolled over to grab her cup only to turn over and find out Maya was fast asleep. I even heard her demanding someone 'share' in her sleep! Tonight Maya was calling 'Mommy, Mommy' about 20 minutes after I put her in bed, so I went up to see what was going on. She was half sitting up and tells me some gibberish I can't make out. Then she told me "There's trouble in my bed." I tried not to laugh and asked "what?" She then told me "meow meow was in trouble on my bed and needs time out." I couldn't help but laugh a little as I snuggled her back in. She was pretty much asleep by the time I shut her door again. It's totally obvious, however, that we have had some behavior issues around here lately with her half asleep reference to time out. She forgets nothing. I told her tonight as I was tucking her in that we will be making pancakes (her favorite) for breakfast in the morning. I would put money on the fact that it will absolutely be the first thing she says when I go to get her out of bed in the morning.

"Happy Birthday!"

Recently Maya discovered Halloween... we went to Target for our almost daily trip (I live way too close...) anyway, while we were there, the employees were putting together the Halloween displays so we took a trip through the costumes to check them out. She wanted to know what Halloween was so Chris explained that we dress up in costumes and go to parties and go trick-or-treating. SO she wanted to know what trick-or-treating was. He told her that we go to people's houses, like our neighbor Jody's house, and knock on the door and say 'Trick or Treat' and the person who opens the door gives you something like candy or a sticker. That satisfied her and she didn't ask anything else. The next day she looked at Chris and said "I go to Jody's and go 'knock knock' and say 'Happy Birthday!". So, she got it, sort of! I'm pretty sure she was just wanting to scout out some candy.

Where is my prince?

Yesterday when we got home from our play date there was a large package from Disney waiting on our porch which contained Maya's costume for Halloween. She chose to be Snow White and we were eagerly waiting for the box to come. Maya couldn't wait to try it on! With glitter everywhere, she spun around our living room ecstatic about her dress. She couldn't wait to show Chris when he got home. After her nap, her first question was, where is my Snow White? Once again, with glitter flying all over my living room she spun around to show her daddy her new costume then stopped dead in her tracks and asked, 'where's my prince.' Gosh, I love that girl! On the other hand, the fact that she was seeking a male companion at 2 1/2 scares the bejeezes out of me!

CSI Toddler...

The Date: August 25, 2009

Location: Living Room
Crime: Excessive use of rice & pancake mix

I had this crazy idea that I would let Maya have some 'freedom' during my shower. Previously she had watched a movie or cartoon on the portable DVD player in my bedroom. However, since Owen's birth she had started playing by herself better from time to time and would ask me to stay and play where she was when I went up to shower. It worked well....for about 3 days. I would check on her 3 or 4 times during the 20 minutes and never had she been doing anything but playing. On August 25th, I checked on her the 3 or 4 times I usually did and then finished and went down to join her (she had been playing with My Little Ponies)....only to see flower all over the back of the couch. I walked into the living room and there she was....my little rice angel...rolling (yes, she really was rolling) in the rice on the floor. She had also put handfuls of pancake mix all over the couch, loveseat, coffee table and end table. What the heck!!!!! When I asked her what she was doing she said 'playing'. She sat in her time out while I started cleaning up and pulled myself back together...what a stinker. Of course, I got a few pictures. She talked about it for days after. FYI: an entire bag of pancake mix and 3/4 bag of rice WILL clog your vacuum. Oh, and she ONLY sits in my room during my shower.

Birthday Pony Cake

In the days leading up to Chris' birthday I kept telling Maya that it was going to be daddy's birthday on Thursday and that we were going to have a little party with the 4 of us. She insisted that daddy wanted a pony cake. We kept telling her that the person whose birthday it is gets to choose what kind of cake they want. Come Thursday...Maya is sick with 102 degree temperature. Chris did, however, get to stay home from work on his birthday but it was only to keep our 2 week old away from our 2 1/2 year old. In the end, I went out that morning to get Chris a cake and ran by Target to get some My Little Pony decorations for the cake (Chris insisted). So, maybe this is more about my husband than my kids. If you look at the picture of Chris and Maya looking at the cake you'll see that he not only has a pony cake BUT that he also forgot to take off the necklace he was wearing while playing dress up with Maya. I love that guy!
